Making the most of city, sea and sky

Some of the best views in Auckland are to be had from the hills above the North Shore suburb of Murray’s Bay. The city’s vibrant coastline. The blue waters of the Hauraki Gulf liberally dotted with sails that give Auckland it’s nickname. And off in the distance glimpses of the Coromandel and Great Barrier Island.

This sumptuous five bedroom home not only capitalizes on those views; it also makes you feel very much part of them.

Which is exactly what Archi-Studio Architect Richard Liu intended.

“The focus was on creating a continuous indoor/outdoor flow that takes advantage of the views of the sea and Hauraki Gulf and brings the outdoors in,” Liu says.

Working closely with the team at ENH Windows, Liu decided on the Tasman35™ System from Altus® Window Systems to bring his vision to life.

“I chose Tasman35™ for its superior quality and contemporary design.” Liu explains. “The stylish finish provides a beautiful aesthetic that compliments the design of the house.”

The fact that the system is robust enough to carry heavy, double glazed panels of up to 2.4 metres high was also an important consideration in plans that called for “big windows and doors”.

Floor to ceiling fixed windows take advantage of all those dramatic outlooks on offer, while allowing plenty of natural light to flood into every room in the house.

Decks abound; there’s one on every level of the three-storey home. A mix of sliding, stacking and bifold doors facilitate the seamless flow from inside to out.

“We used large sliding and stacking doors to open the entire house to the decks,” Liu says. And to ensure nothing impedes the enjoyment of all those views, the deck balustrades are made of glass.

The Master Bedroom is a prime example of how the windows and doors work together to create what Liu describes as a “beautiful, airy atmosphere”.

“We wanted a sense of being outdoors from the comfort of the bedroom,” Liu says.

A three panel bifold door, measuring an impressive 2.2 metres high by 2.7 metres wide opens out onto the deck, while an oversized fixed window looks out towards the ocean.

One storey down, the clever combination of a three panel Ranchstacker™ stacking door and a two panel Ranchslider™ sliding door open the living and dining areas out onto decks and a pool for the al fresco lifestyle Aucklanders love.

Yes. The hills above Murray’s Bay are all about the views. And this home, with its generous use of windows and doors from the Altus® Window Systems Tasman35™ System makes the most of them.
